Wave-Energy Dissipation: Seaweeds and Marine Plants Are Ecosystem Engineers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ocean waves deliver an immense amount of energy to coasts around the planet, powering high-velocity flows that interact with nearshore marine plants and animals. Although some these interactions are beneficial, it is often advantageous for subtidal intertidal ecological communities if wave-induced water velocities can be reduced by safely dissipating wave energy. This function fulfilled seaweeds plants, which thereby act as ecosystem engineers, modifying environment benefit community. Recent advances in hydro-mechanical theory help explain mechanisms vegetation dissipates energy, highlighting role organisms’ tendency bend flow—their structural flexibility—plays their ability engineer flows. Here, I review theories application salt marsh seagrasses, mangroves, seaweeds, focusing on ways serves a foundational community function.

Wave Energy Dissipation Using Perforated and Non Perforated Piles
The indispensable vital structure in any harbor is a breakwater in order to make available calm water region inshore. Pile breakwater can be employed as a small coastal protection structure where tranquility required is low. This study is concerned with CFD study on the performance of perforated hollow pile to dissipate wave energy and the novelty of this investigation is the role of perforatio...
متن کاملConcerns of resistant markers in marine ecosystem transformed plants
World population growth and requirement to global food security, application of genetic engineering and utilization of transgenic organisms have made more important. Using this technology, without regarding to its risks, can cause loses to environment. To generate transgenic organisms, selection systems are applied that cause to selective growth of transformed cells. Antibiotic resistance genes...
متن کاملPlants as ecosystem engineers in subsurface-flow treatment wetlands.
Mass balance performance data from side by side studies of planted and unplanted gravel-bed treatment wetlands with horizontal subsurface-flow are compared. Planted systems showed enhanced nitrogen and initial phosphorus removal, but only small improvements in disinfection, BOD, COD and suspended solids removal. Direct nutrient uptake by plants was insufficient to account for more than a fracti...
متن کاملA mathematical model of plants as ecosystem engineers.
Understanding the structure and dynamics of plant communities in water-limited systems often calls for the identification of ecosystem engineers--key species that modify the landscape, redistribute resources and facilitate the growth of other species. Shrubs are excellent examples; they self-organize to form patterns of mesic patches which provide habitats for herbaceous species. In this paper ...
متن کاملSpectral Cascade and Energy Dissipation in Kinetic Alfvén Wave Turbulence
Spectral cascade and energy dissipation of Alfven turbulence is studied using a massively parallel gyrokinetic particle simulation. The simulation observes a magnetic energy spectrum with a power law index of ”-5/3” in the long wavelength, which agrees with magnetohydrodynamic results in the inertial range. In the dissipation range, the simulation finds a spectral break point on the ion gyrorad...
